The Rovensko pod Troskami area

The area is the region’s geographic centre. In its middle are the ruins of Trosky castle, looming over two unique lava cones. Trosky is also a symbol of the entire region, surrounded by vast cuboidal sandstone plates, shaped by erosion into romantic rock formations and canyon valleys. This area also includes the Podtrosecká údolí (valley) Nature Reserve with a set of ponds, wetlands and wet meadows along the Žehrovka river and Želejovský potok brook. The dominant feature of the northern part is the watch hill of Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise), Kozákov, famous for its precious stone deposits that also gave the hill its name. It is said that if a shepherd throws a stone at a goat (in Czech “koza”), the stone is worth more than the entire herd. The centre of the area is Rovensko pod Troskami with its famous belfry housing “rebelling” upside down bells. Southwest hillsides above the town have been successfully used as orchards.

Rovensko pod Troskami  – there is a neo-Renaissance town hall in the square. Near the Church of Saint Wenceslas, you can see the most important sight of the town, an octagonal wooden belfry from 1630. Three “rebel” bells under the shingled roof are peacefully turned with their hearts up and are set into motion by pedalling. Log houses in the town and the sculptural group called “Rozhovor” (Dialogue) in the square are also worth seeing. The town is known for its precious stone and Czech garnet cutting tradition. The Czech poet Svatopluk Čech used to come here (you can see his bust by B. Sucharda in the park). The Municipal Museum houses an exposition of precious stones, an exhibition of dolls and a seasonal information centre .

Borecké skály – a smaller group of sandstone formations near Rovensko pod Troskami, remarkable because of the unusually structured rock faces with numerous overhanging rocks and windows. Čechova vyhlídka (view point) offers a view of the Trosky castle ruins.

TroskyGothic castle ruins built on two basalt peaks between 1380 and 1390. The towers are referred to as Panna (The Virgin, 59 m) and Baba (The Old Woman, 49 m). During the Thirty Years’ War, the castle became dilapidated. There is a beautiful panoramic view of Bohemian Paradise, the nearby (closed) Apolena rock formations and the giant Quartz sand mine. Trosky are both the dominant feature and one of the symbols of the region. In the village below the castle, you can visit the Museum of Dolls and Teddy Bears.
