Vysoké nad Jizerou is located north-west of Jilemnice, approximately halfway in the direction of Tanvald. The small mountain town lies in the southern part of Jizerské hory, at the elevation of 703m.
According to a legend, Vysoké and nearby Nístějka Castle were founded by charcoal burner Havlas Pavlata who brought a tamed bear to the Prague Court and the monarch paid him with land in the countryside above Jizera.
The oldest monument in the village is the statue of the Madonna in St. Catherine's Church, dating back to the 1st half of the 14th century. Besides that several timbered houses have been preserved in the village.
